Who was John Winthrop?
John Winthrop (–) was a Puritan religious and political leader who played an important role in the establishment, growth, and governance of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
He was born into a wealthy English family, became a Puritan, and worked as a lawyer in the English Courts.
After the Church of England levied restrictions on Puritans, Winthrop lost his position in the courts and decided to move to America.
